Welcome to the Hot Tub Chemical Guide!
The order in which you alter the chemistry of the water is very important. Follow these 3 steps below to achieve perfectly balanced water.
STEP 1 - Total Alkalinity (TA)
Maintaining the Total Alkalinity (TA) in your hot tub is crucial for several reasons:
- Stabilises pH: TA acts as a buffer for pH, preventing it from fluctuating too much. This helps maintain a stable pH level in the water.
- Prevents damage: Low TA can lead to corrosion and damage to your hot tub equipment, such as the heater and pump.
- Ensures comfort: Proper TA levels help prevent skin and eye irritation for bathers.
- Maintains water balance: Keeping TA within the ideal range of 100ppm to 140ppm ensures that your water is balanced and safe for use.
Test the Alkalinity of your spa water at least twice per week, more often if you are located in a soft-water area.
To Increase TA we recommend using Relax Spa Total Alkalinity Increaser:
- Pre-dissolve Total Alkalinity Plus: Dissolve the granules in warm water until fully dissolved.
- Turn on circulation pump: Make sure your spa pump is running.
- Add solution: Slowly pour the solution directly onto the spa water surface.
- Run the pump: Keep the circulation pump running for at least 15 minutes.
- Re-test and adjust: Check the TA level and repeat the dosage if needed until the TA is between 100ppm & 140ppm.
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
To Decrease TA, we recommend using Relax Spa pH Minus and utilising what is known as the 'slug dose'.
- Pre-dissolve pH Minus: Dissolve the pH Minus in warm water to ensure it's fully dissolved.
- Turn off circulation pump: Make sure the water is completely still.
- Slug dose: Carefully pour the solution into the centre of the hot tub, ensuring it forms a ball without disturbing the water.
- Wait 30 minutes: Let the slug dose sit and burn off the alkalinity.
- Re-test and adjust: Re-test the water and repeat the process if needed until the TA is between 100ppm & 140ppm.
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
STEP 2 - pH Balance
Maintaining the pH level in your hot tub is crucial for several reasons:
- Prevents Damage: Improper pH levels can lead to corrosion and damage to your hot tub equipment, such as the heater and pump.
- Ensures Comfort: Proper pH levels help prevent skin and eye irritation for bathers.
- Maintains Water Balance: Keeping pH within the ideal range of 7.2 to 7.8 ensures that your water is balanced and safe for use.
To Increase pH, we recommend using Relax Spa pH Plus:
- Pre-dissolve pH Plus: Dissolve the pH Plus in warm water to ensure it's fully dissolved.
- Turn on circulation pump: Make sure your spa pump is running.
- Add solution: Slowly pour the solution directly onto the spa water surface.
- Run the pump: Keep the circulation pump running for at least 15 minutes.
- Re-test and adjust: Check the pH level and repeat the dosage if needed until the pH is between 7.2 and 7.8
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
To Decrease pH, we recommend using Relax Spa pH Minus:
- Pre-dissolve pH Minus: Dissolve the pH Minus in warm water until fully dissolved.
- Turn on circulation pump: Ensure your spa pump is running.
- Add solution: Slowly pour the solution directly onto the spa water surface.
- Run the pump: Keep the circulation pump running for at least 15 minutes.
- Re-test and adjust: Check the pH level and repeat the dosage if needed until the pH is between 7.2 and 7.8.
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
STEP 3 - Sanitiser
Maintaining proper sanitisation in your hot tub is essential for keeping the water clean and safe for use. You can use either Chlorine or Bromine as your sanitiser. Here's how to maintain the sanitiser levels:
Chlorine Users -
- Ideal Levels: Aim to keep the chlorine levels between 3ppm and 5ppm.
- Adding Chlorine: Pre-dissolve the required amount of chlorine granules in a clean, plastic bucket filled with warm water. Stir the solution until the granules are fully dissolved.
- Turn on circulation pump: Make sure your spa pump is running.
- Add solution: Slowly pour the solution directly onto the spa water surface.
- Run the pump: Keep the circulation pump running for at least 15 minutes.
- Re-test and adjust: Check the chlorine level and repeat the dosage if needed until the levels are between 3ppm and 5ppm.
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
Bromine Users -
- Ideal Levels: Aim to keep the bromine levels between 4ppm and 6ppm.
- Adding Bromine: Pre-dissolve the required amount of bromine granules in a clean, plastic bucket filled with warm water. Stir the solution until the granules are fully dissolved.
- Turn on circulation pump: Make sure your spa pump is running.
- Add solution: Slowly pour the solution directly onto the spa water surface.
- Run the pump: Keep the circulation pump running for at least 15 minutes.
- Re-test and adjust: Check the bromine level and repeat the dosage if needed until the levels are between 4ppm and 6ppm.
- Wait before use: Allow 15 minutes before using the spa.
Using Tablets in a Floating Dispenser -
- Background Dose: To maintain a consistent level of sanitiser in your hot tub, you can use chlorine or bromine tablets in a floating dispenser. This provides a background dose that helps keep the water sanitised over time.
- Adjusting the Dispenser: Adjust the floating dispenser to control the rate at which the tablets dissolve. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the correct dosage.
- Regular Monitoring: Even with a floating dispenser, it's important to regularly test and adjust the sanitiser levels to ensure they remain within the ideal range and it may be requirement to use chlorine or bromine granules to boost the levels. Don't rely solely on a tablet dispenser, treat the dispenser a s a background dose.
Regularly testing and adjusting the sanitiser levels ensures that your hot tub water remains clean, safe, and free from harmful bacteria.
